Type 1 Diabetes

I want to make a guidebook and meal plan booklets for the accessibility of 10+ year old with type 1 diabetes.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?
How are T1 and T2 Diabetes different?

T1

T1 occurs when the pancreas doesn't make insulin.

It can occur in anyone but it is most common in adolescents and young adults.

(10-15 year olds)

T2

T2 is that you make enough insulin or the insulin you do make doesn't work properly.

You're also more likely to get Type 2 if you're over 40.

Why I chose T1 for my Capstone Project?

I have had T1 for 18 years now. I remember when I received packages of supplies, they herein dark colors, I wasn't interested as a child and found it to be a struggle being convinced that I needed this. I want to change the designs and make it more accessible and have easy visuals. The experience is hard enough, the transition should be more inclusive to youth. I received the packages and felt they were not appropriate for my age.

My goal is that when you're newly diagnosed with T1, you receive a package including folder, guidebook, and meal plan to make the transition easier and more enjoyable.

What people said during the interview?
How I found my audience during research?

Interview Questions that I asked; How old were you found out that you have T1?, What was your response/reactions to T1?, and Does anyone in your family have T1?

1. 29 years old

2. My initial response as the doctor told me in the hospital bed that I had T1 was disappointment as my wife was in the room. I felt like I had let her down. I sat silence while thinking about my options. I could either blame & play victim or I could find the positive silver-lining.

3. My younger brother was diagnosed when he was 11 or 12 years old. I was 15 at the time.

— Logan, 33 year olds

1. 13 years old

2. At the time, I was like if this going to get me to the NHL. I guess I'll do the stuff and didn't happen.  I am still playing hockey for fun and diabetes T1 don't not stop me from giving up.

3. no

— Mike, 28 year olds

1. 2 years old

2. My parents reactions was full of sadness and shock and were very confused also worried and overwhelmed. It is a life long struggle in life and in the diabetes world to have all unicorns (100's) we still struggle with it and how to understand and grasp the life long battle that is ahead emotional mentally and physically .

3. no

—Finley, 15 year olds

1. 12 years old

2. We cried lots and scary. After we found out, the hospital give handbook and it was overwhelming and I didn't understand what the whole point. I was like clueless. But we got lots of support and loved.

3. no, my dad had T2 not T1

— Kaylee, 14 year olds

Research: Age 10-15 was the highest peak

The study showed a peak number of new cases in 10-15 years old in both Montana and the USA.

My research told me most common was 10-15 year olds and that become my target audience. My goal was to find a way to help the families with no stress.

Final Presentation-17.png
I want to present my designs to the Bozeman and Billings Hospitals. The goal is to provide more accessibility for 10+ year olds and expand the hospitals ability to help.
What are my goals to improve new designs for the old package to give accessibility to age 10+?

The keywords that I choose for new designs are friendly, easy, accessible, visual and less overwhelmed.

I want the logo to be more visual for age 10+ to able to see and read the word Diabetes Type 1.

The colors I chose were teal, blue, orange and red. The blue represents the colors of ribbon for T1. The teal represents blood level in range. Orange represents blood high and red represents low sugar.

I use more icons and symbols for the kids to understand rather than have them read. The audience will skip that part.

The font that I used for new design was Helvetica and Quicksand (It easy and accessible for kids to read.)
